Fuel gauge stopped - help?

Recommended Posts

Out tonight in newish R300; fuel gauge showed half full on setting out and after about 1/2 mile, it fell back to the turned off position. Tank still half full, loom plugs fully home in the back of the gauge and all fuses sound (not sure which one it is though!). Any ideas? Is there a sender for the fuel gauge and if so, does it commonly go wrong? I'm going to Le Mans nxt week and don't want the same thing to happen in france!

Fuse 2 is the one that supplies power to the instruments. Check this and that all the wires are properly connected at the back (I know you've done this but check again). Ensure the earth wire (black) is actually connectd to an earth somewhere (it may have fallen off) and the power wire (green) has 12v on it.

If all is well on that score, you need to short the sender wire (green/black) to earth with the ignition ON. If the gauge is functioning OK (ie: gauge works mechanically and the electrical connections are good) the gauge will swing over to maximum. If it does, the fault lies on the sender wire or the sender itself (ie: you have no connection - an open circuit).

If the gauge does not go to maximum, the fault is in the gauge or the electrical connections to it.

PS: See this month's Low Flyer for an explanation of gauges and how they work that I wrote.
