Fitting 13" rims - the results

Thought I'd share this with you all now that my new 13" rims have arrived!

 

KN Minators 6 x 13 23mm offset, 185/60 RE720s, switching from 6.5 x 15, 13mm offset 195/50 Michelins

 

Fronts fit a treat but look a little lost under the 15" arches! Easily fixed, CF here I come *wink*

 

The rears do foul on the DeDion ear (ever so slightly), but enough to scrape and would knock off the balancing weights. Easily fixed by adding in a 3mm wheel spacer - no more problems *thumbup*

 

Mine is a 1989 DeDion BTW, so probably has the older style Ford hubs (i.e. holes between the studs)

 

Just adding weight to things that have been said in the past on Blatchat, spot on advice and a big thanks for everyones input.

 

Not driven it yet, will find out what it's like tonight!

 

And a quick plug for Raceways at Donington Park Circuit - superb service, from order to pickup in 3 days - no connection other than a very satisfied customer.

 

A quick question - what is a good tyre pressure for this wheel tyre combo? - engine is a xflow

I can only talk about my car, but 23mm offset touches the DeDion ear, any more offset and I'd be in trouble! The ideal offset for my car would be 20mm at the back (effectively what the wheel spacer gives me)

 

The guy at the KN factory said that 23mm is the one they supply direct to Caterham, and 16mm for the 7" rim - the wheels received were certainly stamped 23.

 

Just my experience, that's all.

 

As for was it worth it? - only had a brief drive, but first impressions are a slightly more compliant ride, better turn in (although that could be the rubber) and slightly improved acceleration - aesthetically, I think that they look a load better than my old Prisoners, but that's just my opinion.

 

Plus new wheels gave me a 3kg weight saving per wheel

Hmm, isn't "offset" the amount of mm from the hub-face to the outer edge of the wheel (you appear to be describing "inset")? In which case what you actually need is more offset. I think Vanessa is right that you need 24mm or more.

My understanding of wheel offset is it the distance between the centre line of the rim to the mounting face of the wheel, and can be measured in both positive and negative.

 

So a positive offset means that the mouting face of the wheel is x mm closer to the outside of the rim of the wheel and so more of the wheel is placed "into" the car - the larger the offset, the more of the wheel is into the car. So in this example, 24mm would mean an extra 1mm of rim would be interfering with the DeDion tube.

 

A negative offset is the reverse meaning the wheel will "stick out" more from the car - typically negative offset wheels have that "deep dished" appearance associated with very wide rims.

Yeap, from center line of wheel to bolting face of web. Offset can be positive and negative.

 

The 6" wheels supplied were ET24mm

The 7" wheels supplied were ET18mm

 

These sizes are well known to KN with the 7" being developed in conjunction with KN & myself and now being offered by Caterham! The reason for the reduced amount of offset on the 7" was to ensure that when mounted with tyres they would not protrude outside the standard guards.

 

As for the question about supply - Sorry Ca%erhamham have shut the shop on my bulk purchase efforts! However, I notice that others are trying so good luck!

The best way to shut down bulk buys is to use your own purchasing power (Big Brother) and sell at a very attarctive price to make going it alone unattractive.

 

Especially when the man helped sort the bloody offsets out!

 

Understand also that the people buying on these bulk buys will not suddenly think "ah well, can't get them cheaper so I may as well bobby off down to Caterham for a set". They'll either try and get discount themselves direct or, more likely, will simply purchase from any number of other places.

 

That way you lose out AND the manufacturer does. And you can't lock out all wheel manufacturers doing hubs with Ford fittings you know (you could, of course, design a completely bizarre hub if you wanted to).

 

And if you can demonstrate absolute reasonableness with your pricing, the knock on is that us 7 mugs will end up spending even more when we do pop down for wheels, aeroscreens, carbon parts etc

 

Because I'm a nice guy, if you're reading you can have that advice for free. Know your customer!

Oopp's! Call myself an Engineer and I can't even get the offsets' correct!

 

6" wheel = +23mm

7" wheel = +18mm

 

Don't know where I got the 24mm bit in my head from 🙆🏻
