expected tyre lifespan...

Steve-B

Recommended Posts

i'm on the end of useful life for my current 21rs. the fronts have lasted for 14.5K miles, 3 sets of rears in the same time 😳

around 200bhp VHPD, SV, used for commuting, some track days, general blatting on backroads.

whatever i purchase, i would prefer to NOT have to replace them before taking car to USA next

year. i don't mind replacing the rears, but would prefer to not have to buy 4 news ones. in addition, should i move UP from 21r to something a bit more sticky, will i need to consider flat flooring our car 🤔

so what are your observed mileage estimates for:

21R

48R

32R

goodyear eagle F1 DS-2(or 3)

in folks' experience.

It's going to depend entirely on use, I've had a set of 032r's last 4K miles on the rear and a bit longer on the front but I wouldn't expect to get much more out of them. 021r's definetly last longer but aren't as much fun.

No idea on 048r's and I'm pretty sure you can't get the Goodyear Eagle F1's in anything smaller than a 15" wheel so they probably aren't worth thinking about. As an aside I run them on my 406 tintop and a set lasted around 20K miles with a 200bhp V6!! so I reckon they are a bit to hard for a seven.

Cheers

I don`t think 48`s or 32`s are going to last in USA....or at least it will be marginal.

I`m prbably going to fit 21`s for the USA tour to ensure I get the mileage without having to change en route. The others may not last very long given the combination of hot weather, spirited driving and high mileage. Even if you fit 48`s at the start of the tour they could well be bald by the end *eek*

I`ve fitted Goodyear Eagle DS2`s to the Volvo and they are great, particularly in standing water, but on a lightweight se7en they would be too hard. Rob I`m amazed you get 20,000 out of them, my Volvo eats them like they are going out of fashion......my local tyre dealer know`s me by name now *eek*

What about CR500`s......what kind of mileage can be expected from them?

The last set of Goodyears lasted nearer 30K miles!! not quite sure how but a lot of it was motorway miles which I guess helps. I also rotate them around the car..

CR500's hmm well Geoff used to get 7-9K out of set of his but I only saw 4k on the Targe Liege trip out of mine, having said that I have got knackered suspension and an enthusiastic driving style 😬

I'm running a set at the moment in SLR sizes and they seem to be lasting pretty well so that's what I'll be using on the USA trip.

steve,

Iin 9K of roads and 3 track days I've pretty much lunched a set of avon ZZ1s. Basically the track days kill them. I reckon that with no track days they would last 15K or so.

I've now done about 2K miles on the 13" 032r's I have. The wet angelsey track day didn't wear them at all. One track day at Elvington has lunched both rears and the front left. The road miles in between again seem to be insignificant compared to the track miles.

Saying that 032s for USA '05 probably wouldn't last. Espcecially in those hot empty Texan parking lots that just shout our 'donut me, donut me...' Or was that just me in the rental Chevy Silverado??

I would guess Cr500s would last, and 021s would be ok. But I don't have personal experience of those.

On the Eagle F1 front, I've got about 15k out of the set on my BMW 540i. Once again, the track day I did in it did the real damage, taking probably about 5K off the rears...

ps... get her flat floored... Steve Fostser did mine for me in 2 hours on a sunday morning. He lives just down the road from where I used to live in West End. If you speak nicely to him he might fit you in one evening after work. A donation to NTL is all he askes.. and the results are certainly worth it.

Hi Steve

They seem to last a good few races - Super and Mega Grads use CR500's and they are limited to 3 sets a season for racing. I don't do a full season and get by on one set.

Mind you, you could nearly get 8 Yoko 32's for the price of 4 CR500's!

Steve, my usage is similar to yours (my commute is the opposite way *tongue*). I highly recommend CR500's.

I've just finished the rears of my first set of CR500's, and they've done just over 8k miles (still plenty of tread left on the fronts). Compare that to the 3k I got from 32's and 6k I got from 21's. They are almost as grippy as 32's; better than 21's. And the car feels great on them. I've already bought the replacements (CR500's again) and will get them fitted this week.

Steve, have you got 13"'s or 15"'s?!

Just thinking that 13" CR500's on my regular 7 look diddy (not in a bad way) but on an SV they might look a bit silly?!Having done a few laps at Oulton starting on 32r's and then swapping to CR500's I can honestly say I was well impressed with the CR500's but wouldn't want to do much more than a 20 minute session as they felt like they were getting a bit warm and melting. My 32r's have lasted pretty well though with half a dozen track days and 5000 miles (rotated), still got a trackday or two left in them. Flat flooring seems to help the wear characteristics too. If you're commuting and drive a reasonable amount in the proper wet I would look elsewhere though.

If they're 15"'s my prisoner wheels have Yoko AVS for the off season and have been used on track and they seem to be lasting well, just a thought *confused*

PS I've only ever heard good things about 48's - mail Shaun E, Peter Griffiths or even better Angus who does loads of miles on his *thumbup*

i'm currently on 185 X 60 X 14 21s

so i can buy two sets of 48s for 1 set of CR500s.

i can not afford to buy two sets of tyres before the end of 2005.

i do about 6,000 miles a year, and will do 3,400 for USA 2005.

so my condundrum is simple, i want something that will take me to the end of good

weather this year.

i might be able to stretch for 2 sets of 48s which would make the above mileage, but it appears that CR500s won't make that.

discuss *wink*

Steve - I'm pretty sure that CR500s don't come in 14". A048Rs are available in 14" (Peter has that size). I am very happy with the 48s but haven't had them long enough to comment on wear rates. Perhaps you ought to put some wider tyres on the rear of your car - most SLRs/R400s run with 205 rears.

As you know I used to run 21s and they seemed to last about 5k miles and 3 trackdays - any dry track day would finish them off though.

For those coming to the USA next year be aware that there are very few 13" tire options available for a 7 in the USA. Not many cars use 13" tires here and those that do are not performance oriented vehicles. Some examples: Avon ACB 10 & CR 500 may be available by mail order only, forget about other Avon tires; AO32 if you are very lucky in a store(buy a lottery ticket that day if you actually find the right size in a store); AO48 not available; Michelin no; Goodyear NO; Dunlop NO; Pirelli NO; Bridgestone NO; etc. Advise that you bring spares and be sure that if you are bringing a spare front, some other car is bringing a spare rear tire so that both cars are covered a bit better.

You might also contact a mail order house like Tire Rack in advance and see if they are willing to help. As they sponsor SCCA events across the USA they may be willing to give you some help if you wear their decals---don't know for sure on that, but it's probably worth a try. 7 owners do buy tires from them and the pub wolud only help them. *cool*

I have 186/70x12 A021's on my car. I do a mixture of cruising around and blatting, but no trackdays, and after my crash a couple of years ago i'm not the most committed corner-taker .

I replaced the rears after about 7,000miles and when I checked them last night (after another 500 miles) the fronts still have just under 5mm left on them, so I reckon I'll get a similar figure to you from them

i've got that sinking feeling i'm back to 21s again.... ☹️

i want to have more fun, but am unsure if i can afford all the tyres for 1 more year.

21s seem sensible, but will be checking finances for ACB compatability 😳

I have had 48s now for some 8-9 months and have doneabout 2000 miles on them, for me they are only now starting to really come in to their own (not that they weren't great before)but now they are really really grippy. I clearly don't push the car as hard as others on this forum, but I do my best however I expect my 48s to last quite a while yet.

Hope this helps,

Chris

hi steve - the mileage on USA is about 3000 isnt it? plus a couple of trackdays? I would feel quite happy about taking a new A048r on that trip. I got my first set of A048r in January and I went through a set of rears in about 5000 miles, that included some track work. The fronts are still okay and should do about 7000-8000 miles total. this is the softer of the two compounds.

a couple of things - I am attempting (not very succesfully) to change my driving style so that I am less sideways, and also not working them too hard when they are cold as i find them very easy to spin up when they are cold which cannot be good for the wear rate. the other thing i have done is go from a 185 to a 205 in the hope of a bit more lengevity (215bhp Vx)

when they are new they are great in the wet. when for a wet blat with a mate and his comment was "fsck me I cannot believe the speed you were doing with those tyres". when i changed them they were virtually slick and not so good.

all in a good choice, but i havent had "sticky" rubber on my car before so difficult to make ultimate grip comparisons.
