Exhaust heaven

I'd always intended to get a decent exhaust system after the SVA, and later than planned, it has finally happened. 1 x EBD 4-2-1 manifold and 1 x Raceco silencer later, and we have this.

The performance increase has exceeded my expectations, it looks awesome, and thanks to Ammo of Raceco for the sound meter, it measures nice & quiet too. From 78dBA at idle to 98dBA at 5.5k from a standard 1.8 VVC.

I do love it when a plan comes together teeth.gif

Mmm, nice system Luke, smart car too. I was particularly impressed with your attention to detail in getting exactly the right body colour to match with the seat belts.

What sort of price did you pay for the new system? Is lack of a cat. going to be a prob. at MoT time, or will you just put the old system back on?

Paul, as I understand it... as long as the car was not a factory assembled car but sold as a kit, then you can get away with no cat. as the emission test for MOT is visual.

Certainly, that how my friendly MOT garage applies the rules.

John's right - one of the 'K' letters in the chassis no. denotes a kit, so you point out to the MOT tester that it's an amateur built vehicle, and the only emissions test is for visible smoke.

The colour of the belts was a coincidence, but having the badges say "LUKE" instead of "Caterham" wasn't smile.gif

The manifold cost £425, I got the silencer late last year - £300 rings a bell - Raceco are advertising in the current Low Flying if anyone wants to check.

John/Luke,

The 'no need for a catalyst issue on kit built cars' is potentially slightly different if your car has passed an SVA test. I have been warned by the factory that whatever the DoT are called nowadays are likely to extend the MOT regs at some point to ensure that all cars which passed an SVA test are subject to much closer scrutiny - which will mean emission checks - whether kit built or not. Potentially this means all cars registered since Jul 98 (?) could be caught so all owners who have replaced exhausts and removed catalysts need to retain their old systems - they might have to refit them once every year!

The new system certainly looks good!

Hi Luke system looks great intend to go the same route myself with a 1.6SS. However on a different note the colour of your car appears to be the same as mine and I intend to colour code bits etc. I'm having problems tracking done a paint code so if you can shed any light on the proper name and perhaps more importantly the paint code itself would be very much appreciated cheers phil
