Dave Rothwell
Hi all, Can anyone advise me if it's possible to tell if a chassis is metric or imperial from the chassis number. I'm looking to buy a cage from a club member but need to know the above as my car is imperial but the vendor is not fully sure about his cage so has supplied me his frame number. Otherwise anyone know the best person to talk to at Caterham to glean the same info from, Muchos Gracias as always, daveR. Grubbster
Not sure about the chassis number but it is easy to tell them apart by looking in the engine bay. Imperial chassis have the long diagonals (sometimes removable) but the metric chassis don't - they have shorter bars that brace across the corners of the engine bay - makes it easier to fit the engine but takes up the place where the apollo would normally sit. Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted July 26, 2012 Leadership Team Share Posted July 26, 2012 Dave, ask if (on the cage) he can measure the length of the small stub of tube that fits into the locating hole above the rear shock? This is the biggest differing factor - these tubes on metric cages are much shorter and will need a small spacer (or washers) when fitted to an Imperial chassis. Stu. Dave Rothwell
Many thanks guys - I have asked the vendor to check your infomation - Also Caterham advise me if you look at the bottom chassis tube under the rear wheel arch If the chassis is Imperial then the bottom tube should be round section all the way (as is mine) - if metric then it will be round section joined to square section around the roll bar clamp area. Cheers for that, daveR.
