Peter Brett
I want to replace the front brake pads on my SLR. Can someone tell me the best method please. Do you need any special tools? Nothing came up on the search, probably because it is trivially easy. Peter W 7SLR
shn7
Fronts are trivial. A wind back tool (from Halfords for about £15) makes life easy for the rears. Steve.

jimmyslr
Easy, honest. Take wheel off. There are 2 retaining bolts at the rear of the callipers; undo these. The anti-rattle clip (metal plate thingy) falls away; remember to replace it. Pads then slide out backwards (ie towards you as you are squatting behind front wheel. It is quite obvious when you get down there and is a quick job. You might need to sqeeze the pistons back in a bit with some pliers covered in something to stop scratching/damage. Really is a half hour exercise. Same not true of rears! Probably worth bleeding brakes after.

caterhamnut
Peter - very quick and easy, but if you want to see it done/learn the first time etc etc, I am sure either Mark 355 will help in his garage - close to you in Lower Earley. I am also happy to show you - I am nearer Staines though. Video's and big update! here 77,777miles in 3 years

Chelspeed
And there's 3 different kinds of calipers fitted as the uprate brake kit, early ones silver, middle ones black, late ones balck and take a different pad. The early silver type has a bolt on (2 allen bolts) pad retainer, the middle one I'm not sure about, the latest type has either pins or bolts, one of which fauls the wing stay so you need to loosen the caliper on the upright to get clearance. All slightly different but all equally easy.
Peter Brett
Thanks everybody. I guessed the allen bolt needed removing, but I didn't want to undo them and the calper falls in half!! Peter W 7SLR
F355GTS
Peter don't undo the 6 Allen bolts (3 top, 3 bottom) that are recessed into the caliper or it will fall in half it's just the two about 2" apart that hold the plate behind the brake pads Mark
