Dobuy
I have been using Redline MTL in my BGH box during the last year mostly on the track and am pretty happy with it. However, other threads comment that BGH do not recommend MTL as it is not good for the syncro's (too acidic I think). I have the box out at the moment for installation of a new engine, so it would seem like a good time to re-visit my gearbox oil needs. As products like Comma or Silkolene are limited out here in the Desert, can anyone recommend a Mobil or other widely available brand of gearbox oil for my needs? rgrigsby
Errm they did? hmm they told me to use a Castrol oil but I can't remeber exactly which one. Chris at the 7's workshop has a BIG tub of it!
Dobuy
I just called BGH and they said to use Comma SX75W90 (GL4). Only problem is they have never heard of Comma out here, either oil or punctuation wise 😬 They explicitly said not to use Redline MTL as it is too slippy and lacks the correct film depth for old Syncro boxes. Nigel Riches
Castrol Syntrax 75W90 is in my box, after some research, it is a grade used in Citroen cars of some sort, so you may get some from a Citroen agent if Castrol is not available directly, but I don't suppose either are widely available out in the bondhu, but maybe this is a starting point for you. 1982. 5 speed, clamshells. oilman
I would have said any semi or fully synthetic 75w-90 would be the ticket. Quaiffe actually recommend this one: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/TechSpecs/SILKTRAN%20SYN-5%20-%204%20Wheel.pdf Cheers Simon Contact me: sales@opieoils.co.uk Oil data: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm 01209 215164
AMMO
Oilman My race team used to be sponsored by Castrol so I still have some oil left over which i am slowly using up. I am using Castrol TAF-X in my gearbox and will probably switch to Syntrax when that runs out. I will be fitting a ZF LSD to my diff. Don't know what to use. I still have some SAF-XJ from when my race team was sponsored by Castrol. What would you suggest? Also using Castrol SLX 0-30 in my 220bhp spec Duratec. Any opinions on these oils? Do oils have a shelf life? The transmission oils has been sitting around a while. AMMO
oilman
Yes oils do have a shelf life, 3-5 years unopened. SLX 0w-30 is a decent and shear stable oil, it's used for BMW variable servicing which means it has to have a decent life. My only comments on the gear oils would be that I remember reading on a data sheet that Syntrax is not suitable for LSD's. I.Mupferit
Do Caterham stock that Comma gear oil? Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬
Normans_Ghost
Brian Hill considers Castrol oils to have to much acid content which creates microscopic pitting on the bearing and gear surfaces. He recommends Caterham oil which is made by Comma. Personally, whilst I do not doubt Brians findings, I think it may be the perfectionist's view. If you don't want to use Castrol then I'm sure Mobil will be OK. Dobuy
I picked up some Comma SX75W90 from www.cliffordsofbrighton.co.uk which they had in stock. Bloody good tool shop, Then I found the purveyor of shiny nuts, Namrick, just round the corner. Hove, just became one of my favourite shopping towns!
