Intending to go sprinting inMidland Speed Championship (www.midlandspeed.org.uk) in road going class (2B) this year, but car currently shod with Yoko A021 so need a new set of 1A tyres. Which are best for a 7 ( 2-litre ztec-165bhp live axle and can run 6 or 7 inch rims)

MSA licence application in the post so current list not known.

Is anyone else doing (or has done) a few rounds of this championship?

Thanks

Tony

The top guys in the roadgoing classes use Bridgstone Potenza SO2 Pole Position 195/50 x 15. That's what I've put on mine and I'll see you at some of the rounds this year :-) I think they don't come in a size smaller than 15 inch though, so I bought some Prisoner wheels to go with them.

I don't think the SO2 is available new anymore but both the SO2 and new SO3 are listed in this year's Blue Book.

The rubber gets softer as the tyre wears down, and some of your replies will no doubt suggest you have the top layer of rubber buffed off - sounds like sacrilege to me, I'll srub it off on the Welsh roads :-)

I was also told that the Bridgestone SO2's were the only ones to have from list 1A - so I picked up set, ready scrubbed. I must admit, I didn't know that they were supposed to get softer the more the rubber is worn though!

We shall see when they get their first outing in May.

Alex

I ran Falkens (185 and 205/60 x 13)for the latter half of last season. I found them too hard. Great after a couple of laps at a track day, but you can't get enough heat into them for a sprintsad.gif

With 160bhp Zetec, I'd be trying RE720's as suggested (185 all round), and is what I'll be doing on the fronts this year. I have a different tyre for the rear this year, 'cos you can't get RE720's in UK spec in a 205 fitting........I'm afraid I can't tell you what that'll be, 'cos I'm hoping to steal a march on some of my fellow competitors. An extra 40bhp will help tooteeth.gif

I'll be running my 1.6 Clubsport (with rather more bhp than standard - Thank you Mr King) in the CCC Speed Series and some other events. I've got a set of 1A Yoko 539's (185/60 13) at present which were certainly frightening/entertaining round Cadwell compared with my normal 032's and 021's. Does anyone know how these 539's compare with the alternatives from Toyo, Bridgestone etc??

Don't worry about sharing your secrets with me - I don't think I'll be threatening any serious contenders!!

When I last tested the compounds on the Falkens ZE-502 and the Bridgestone 720's the 720's were undoubtedly softer, however, the 720's don't have the rubber footprint that the Falkens have as the Falkens have less guttering, so they are closer in performance than the compounds might suggest. On balance though, I found the Bridgestones slightly better, but as with all 1A's there is damn all in it. The Yoko 539's are a similar compound to the 720's and offer a similar level of performance although not many competitors seem to be using them yet.

I ran in 2a in the Midland speed last year on RE720 185/60/13 all round . The tyre is quite progressive however once they had been buffed - this is a must if you are serious - it was worth almost a second around Llandow , with 190 bhp there will never be enough grip on 1a tyres .

Many competitors ran on 15" rims but you have to remember the weight and gearing penalty this brings .

I would suggest RE720 buffed to 3.5 mm .

Thanks Simon,

Protyres (01452 505588 - Paul) have just quoted me for 185/60 x 14 RE720's Fitted (valve, balance, inc vat) - 2 = £83.37 & 4 = £166.74

They won't deliver but are happy to supply unfitted (inc vat) for collection: - 2 = £70.57 & 4 = £141.14

My only problem is i'm on the kent/east sussex border and getting to gloucester and back will blow out any saving i make!

Does anyone know of somewhere closer to me? (I know Cake & Eat It springs to mind)
