About This Group

A special interest group for those interested in the Caterham 21, a car built between 1994 and 1999 and incorporating a streamlined body over a development of the 7 spaceframe. About 42 examples were built, of which typically one third are taxed for UK use during the summer, one third are SORN'd, and one third now overseas.
  1. What's new in this group
  2. It was a good day for catching up and also see just how different the ali prototype was compared to the production cars. Looking forward to Jez starting his YouTube channel.
  3. Because this group is spread across the world rather than a small geographic area, I maintain a register of all 21s built, listed by chassis number and detailing original and current spec, owner details and location and ownership history. All current 21 owners have read/write access to the file, and of course full control over what personal data is shown. If you own a 21 and would like access to the register or have forgotten how to find it, drop me a line and I'll send you a link. We also have a very useful 21-owner WhatsApp group for swapping ideas, organising group buys of parts for this rare car and general chit chat. If you're thinking of buying a 21, keep an eye open on this group - I will often be able to post information here before the sale has been announced publicly.
  4. A total of eight 21s made it to the Graham Nearn commemoration at the Haynes Motor Museum, which this year also marked the 30th anniversary of the launch of the 21. Cars present included the 'Isle of Wight' car, recently purchased from its first owner and recommissioned by club member Toby Stephenson, and the 1995 Earls Court aluminium prototype kindly loaned to us by its creators, Roach Manufacturing. I interviewed Jez Coates about the genesis of the car and the program's relevance to Caterham today, and also Graham's grandson Charlie Nearn, who is approaching the end of his first season in the Caterham Academy, and spoke of his memories of his grandad and the pride of his involvement with the Caterham movement. Thanks to everyone who came, and especially the C21 owners who brought their cars. One of the museum's employees, Joan Duncan-Webster, came over and described how one evening in 1997 her late husband, who worked for Caterham at the time, had brought home a 21 to take her for a drive. She remembered that the car was black, which narrowed it down to just one car, and by a stroke of luck it was present! She was delighted to be reintroduced to the car, meet its current owner and pose for pictures with it.
  5. Hopefully we'll get to see it on September 28th
  6. Car is now sold, without ever being advertised outside this group.
  7. I am trying to maintain a list of all 21s built, which is quite tricky due to the fact that the factory's records are somewhat incomplete and no one knows exactly how many were built. The following is a list of cars we know have existed, but whose whereabouts (and survival) is uncertain. Please let me know if you know where any of them are! P134 CPG, grey, 1.6, ex Paul Nix, believed to be in Switzerland T362 PKR, VW Bramble met, 1.6, sold through Silverbrookes 7/2012, Last MoT exp 5/15. SORN T248 WRV, blue, 1.6, ex Tim Squires, MoT exp 1/2021 P649 TGU, green, Photographed outside in poor condition 8/21; never MoTd R202 YYY, yellow, Photographed in 2011; not on DVLA database GTO, red, ex James Constas, Original GTO race car tested by Evo magazine 01/01. Integral hardtop. Last heard of in Great Lakes, Michigan, now with RST V8. Any leads, however obscure and out-of-date, are welcome! Guy Lachlan, 21AR +44-(0)7515-641889
  8. 21's don't come up for sale very often, especially low-mileage one-owner cars like this one. This one is a 1.8 5-speed (better ratios than a 6-sp in a 21) with just 28k miles on the clock. First registered Feb 98, has been SORNd for three years but is said to be in sound condition and well looked after. First pic attached is from a few years ago, the rest are how it is now. Owner has decided he's too old for it now, and to part with it so someone else can enjoy it. He wants to retain the number. Car's in the Isle of Wight at the moment. If you're interested, in the first instance send me a message through this site and I'll forward to the owner. I have no involvement in the sale, other than wanting it to find a good new home.
