Steering in the right direction

Getting the old joints off the other day was a hassle, it has to be said. A tapered joint, whilst very effective, is difficult to separate! So the new design, where the steering arm is drilled out to make the hole uniform, will ease any dismantling issues one might have in the future!

With the joint off, and the wing pushed to one side, the arm was DeWalted. Opening out the holes was not easy, and while a pillar drill would have been preferable, I didn't have one! So hand drill it was, and hand drill I did!

The rest of it was quite simple, just assembling the parts in the right order, then tightening up the nuts. Actually, it was so easy, I wasn't sure what to do with myself as the plan was to tackle just the joints yesterday evening.

So sitting there, I thought I might as well refit the lights and the carbon indicator pods. To make removal easier in the future, instead of reusing the screws and nuts that originally held the indicator to the pod, I used self-tappers. Much easier, and I can always drill out the holes a touch and use screws and nuts in the future. Threading the wires back through the stays was, as always, mega hassle, but I got there eventually.

With the lights reassembled, Talloulah now looks more like a 7 - the big lights, I think, make the car appear to have more character.

So what next? I've ordered some Speed Bleeders from Goodridge, which will make bleeding the brakes a doddle, and I still need to tackle the silicone hoses and replace the coolant. An oil change is required, and I would like to fit an Apollo too.

I am debating whether to leave the wishbones for the summer and then get them re-powdercoated next winter, or to take them off now and give them a lick of paint to tide them over - perhaps I'll just give them a touch up now. It never ceases to amaze me just how bad the powdercoat is, and I think, in a few years, if I go for a reskin I will have the whole chassis done in nylon - much sturdier. But they are just plans for now!

I will also have to give the car a bloody good polish!
