Relocation, Relocation, Relocation
When the Banner died a glorious death, and refused to do anything a good battery should do, I replaced it with the RMD 25 - the Rally Design equivalent of a Varley Red Top, at a third of the price - couldn't turn that down!
To get the car moving again, I just wedged the new battery in to the old holder, jammed a lump of wood in so that the cradle held it, and left it.
With the car in bits, I thought it was time to get a special tray the right size and use that. As the battery is sealed, it can lie on it's side so I could move it to the bulkhead. With a shiny tray ordered from Optimum Braking Performance, I got the drill out and set to.
Removing the old tray was straight forward - the rivets drilled out easily, and I needed a bit of brute force to unwedge it, but it came. That area got a nice clean as it was a tad crusty - lots of dirt trapped, and what looked like battery acid...
Next, I removed the ECU and MFU, and tucked the loom out of the way. Marking up where I wanted to put the battery, I found that the battery leads were a touch too short. Fortunately, I figured some careful repositioning of the cables where they fix to the starter motor would solve that, so I clambered under the car with a spanner and set to (don't do this with the engine still warm after a blat, those headers are close!).
With the cables now slack enough, I checked the positioning once again, and marked where I wanted the holes. Drilling the tray first, with a 5mm bit, then the bulkhead with a 4mm, I am using self tappers for now but might progress to rivunts if I can borrow a tool!
I added some sticky back foam to reduce vibrations and rattling, and screwed the battery down to help these stick on. ECU and MFU were remounted after a bit of a clean, and the cables tided and resecured with fresh zip ties, and all done! Looks much neater, and I'm happy the battery can't escape now!
