Maybe the best orange car in the world...

I collected the car today from Crawley (with the help of Rob J) and drove it back to Somerset via family in Newbury. We avoided main roads and had a great blast along A roads.

It is fantastic, and better than I imagined. The 160 is a lovely car.

The car handles very well, and has quite a bit more 'poke' than expected. My intentions to run the car in gently with low revs were not always stuck to. Overtaking on A roads was not much of a problem.

Interesting reactions from folks too. A few thumbs up, a few challenges to go faster (but declined).

It took a while to get used to the (rather) limited visibility behind (I need to do a bit of work on my mirrors). I also had a few little anoyances like the key fob got in the way when using the clutch.

The IVA

It took two attempts to get through the IVA (but nothing to do with my build skills, I hasten to add). Fortuntely I paid caterham to get it through, and this turned out to be a good move. The hassle would have been considerable.

Registration

This took 2 weeks. The DVLA returned my built up vehicle report for some extra details, and this slowed down, but when I rang them they were willing to help rush it through.

Sounds great, Martin! When I fitted the seats, I definitely thought those bolts seemed to hang rather low.. I wonder about turning the bolts upside down, or even just Dremel the ends off to save half an inch!

My car is awaiting PBC at Caterham, and still no news of an IVA date...

Yes driven it in the very wet, no problem as long as you are not too heavy with the go pedal. The roof held up really well but I had some water ingress in through the doors by the window seal that dripped onto the armrest. I will put some glue/sealant on the window seal. Strangely only happened on one side . The car had been great and so far behaved faultlessly but we have another 4 days and about 500 miles to go so won't want to tempt fate

Martin

PS sorry to hear about your IVA Ned, I know what you are going through!

Thanks Martin.

I'm up to 700 miles now (and we did a great blast down to Woolacome for breakfast yesterday). I'm contemplating my first oil change before a big trip up To Scotland.

Please could someone let me know the code of the oil filter if you have it to hand. Mine is annoyingly pointing the wrong way, and I get a new one lined up before removing the current one. (Not a big deal, I'm being a bit lazy).

Hi guys

I've had a reply from Caterham midlands the oil filter is a FRAM PH 4997 from a local motor factors or should be the same as on a suzuki cappuccino model

The oil should be shell helix professional 5w-30

I hope this helps, I'll be changing mine over the next few days as its due its first service.

Thanks Mike, that's helpful.

i'm going to change the engine oil, diff oil and check the bolt torques.

We have got a big trip coming up. I just hope that, after all this, I don't break anything!

Thanks Mike - I was wondering how we find out part numbers as the Owners Hhandbook is particularly poor in this area.

Update on my brakes - applying copper slip to either side of the anti squeal shim on the front discs seems to have worked. And I 'wire wooled' the rear brake pads to rough up the top surface where they had yet to wear - this also seems to have worked.

Crikey you've got a handbook! lucky man, I having been emailing caterham midlands on this and at the moment awaiting a reply as all I have basically are 2 sets of keys and a build manual, no handbook or service book(I'm wondering if any one gets these). which leaves me not knowing what to service or when.

What I have been doing is contacting caterham midlands and asking them for the part numbers. I must say they have been very helpfull with all my questions so far.

I'll be changing the oil and filter at the weekend and I'm hopeing that it will resolve the low oil pressure reading.

Hi boys now back after a 1300 mile trip from France the car behaved faultlessly. The oil filter part numbers I have are for Suzuki 16510 81404 and for the replacement that I got from caterham Crawley is Bosch P2058 but they gave me the wrong one to start with so I hope that is correct. I'm using the naff caterham handbook that I downloaded from their web site, its not great so I'm trying to record things as I go.

Thanks for the tip I have just downloaded and printed off the manual, Why oh why didnt caterham tell me where it was?

Looking at it surely it should have delivered stamped up after the post build check?

Looks like you had a great trip in france

I got my service record stamped by Caterham when they did the PBC but you need to remember to get it done. Also the manual is generic across all models but you need to follow the service intervals which is shown for a 160

Thankyou Martin for the advise I'm booked in to go up to caterham midlands next thursday to get some parts changed so i'll double check service (stamps) etc with them when I see them.

Watch out folks...

When I did my 1000 mile service yesterday I checked the whole car over. Virtually everything seemed ok (although the paint takes a hammering where things rub).

However, I did notice that the ventilation slot number 4 on the left hand side of the bonnet was slowly sawing it's way through the rubber air intake tube. I fixed it by gluing on a bit of IVA trim to the metal edge.

I took advantage of the damp conditions in Somerset to test the limits of friction today (on quiet roads at slow speeds).

yep, it definitely locks up if you press hard enough! Also the back end comes out if you try.

In the interests of science I took a sound recording of my 160 on the motorway.

image_66.jpg.fa77325ada74b6bfe814ed6d88bf0a2d.jpg

The noise reached about 92dB (open top), and with the half hood up at around 40mph I also took similar readings.

A quick search on google showed that unprotected exposure to this level for prolonged periods (over an hour) is probably not the best.

I let you know for info....

I can support that from some "on the ground" readings, after 60 mins on the motorway we'd had enough!   50mph is a very reasonable touring speed not too loud but decent enough speed anything else requires headphones or slight deafness to make to acceptable

Martin

Noise - now there's a problem I didn't imagine. Looks like ear defenders for a longer trip because a steady 50 would be really boring!

Mod 1 - I have fitted a high level brake light and have experienced immediately that cars stay further behind than without one. Bought it on eBay, about £4, came all the way from Hong Kong! Removed the bracket, used two sticky-on tie wrap holders and made up my own loom extension.HighLevelBrakeLight.jpg.989d429ac6ffacbb94847c970677ef62.jpg My car is going well, about 750 on the clock. Although I have a squeaky top bush on the steering when just moving the steering wheel - anyone else experiencing the same? Mind you, at normal speeds can't hear it anyway.

Hello Folks...

We talked about a 160 owners meet up next weekend...

I'm quite keen to have a bite in a pub and kick 160 tyres if anyone else is.

I did suggest Somerset, but something more central might be better (Newbury?, Haynes motor museum on the A303?).

I'm free at the weekend or most days/evening this week.

any interest?

I would definitely have been up for it.

But sadly my IVA retest is on Friday, so the car is not yet on the road.

The first IVA test failed on two things:

- fuse blown on windscreen wipers. This is something I'd asked Caterham to fix, as it had already happened to me

- L-R brake balance on the front was 'unacceptable'. Nobody seemed to know what this meant, but hopefully CC have gone over it again and fixed it ready for Friday

So fingers crossed....! And have a great run out without me!

Hello Ned,

ah I feel for you. My car also failed on a problem with the wiper fuses. This should be a known problem *confused*

the very best of luck with the retest.

if others reply, and we do meet up, you should still come and hitch a ride.

i think I will probably go to the Poole event on he 21st, I understand that Peter will be there too.

Ah Ok, we all seem a fairy busy bunch. Let's bag it.

I look forward to seeing you with your cars at some stage. (After all we went through!)

We should definitely fix something up. I feel kinship with you guys!

Can you all cross fingers, pray and whatever else will definitely help for Friday, and my IVA retest?

Ta!
